"The God of the cosmos once lived in a tent"
King Solomon, the builder of an incredible temple, once exclaimed that even the highest heavens could not contain God, let alone the temple that he had built (1 Kings 8.27). Yet the infinitely grand God of the cosmos chose to make himself intimately small, living on earth in the middle of troubled humans. The God of Israel first did this in the tabernacle, a tent. Yet this was not just any tent. It had three levels, it was ornately decorated, it had to be constructed and carried in particular ways. In its inner chamber, we would find the ark of the covenant, an ornate box with golden cherubim upon the top. Why all these details, what were they for? And not just anyone could enter the inner sanctum of the tent, just one priest, once a year. What or Who did the priest encounter in that space? An in-visible, a non-visible, an in-describable God? What might that have been like and what does all of this have to do with being a Christian today?
